Resolution
to
commemorate
the
service
and
sacrifice

of
Iowans
at
the
Battle
of
Wilson’s
Creek.

WHEREAS,
for
many
Iowans
their
baptism
under
fire
3
came
at
Wilson’s
Creek,
on
a
sultry
August
day
in
1861,
4
when
the
second
major
battle
of
the
Civil
War
was
5
fought;
and
6
WHEREAS,
mustered
for
service
in
May,
on
August
10,
7
1861,
the
1st
Regiment
Iowa
Volunteer
Infantry
was
8
part
of
Brigadier
General
Nathaniel
Lyon’s
Army
of
the
9
West;
and
10
WHEREAS,
Lyon’s
little
army
battled
a
large
11
confederate
force
all
of
the
morning,
and
then
at
last,
12
with
Lyon
dead
and
their
ammunition
exhausted,
the
Army
13
of
the
West
withdrew;
and
14
WHEREAS,
during
the
battle,
Nicholas
Bouquet,
a
15
young
Iowa
volunteer,
left
the
line
of
battle
and,
16
exposing
himself
to
the
rebels,
captured
a
horse
17
between
the
lines
and
hitched
the
horse
to
a
disabled
18
gun,
saving
the
gun
from
capture;
and
19
WHEREAS,
for
that
act
of
initiative
and
bravery,
20
Private
Bouquet
was
awarded
the
Congressional
Medal
of
21
Honor
in
1897;
NOW
THEREFORE,
22
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
as
we
commemorate
23
the
sesquicentennial
of
the
American
Civil
War,
24
the
Senate
honors
the
service
and
sacrifice
of
the
25
thousands
of
Iowans
who
fought
to
save
the
United
26
States
and
bring
freedom
to
millions.
