WHEREAS,
the
College
of
Cardinals
elected
Cardinal

Jorge
Mario
Bergoglio
as
the
266th
pontiff
of
the

Roman
Catholic
Church,
ending
nearly
1,300
years
of
5
European-born
popes,
and,
in
his
words,
finding
him
6
“from
the
end
of
the
earth”;
and
7
WHEREAS,
Cardinal
Bergoglio
taught
literature,
8
psychology,
philosophy,
and
theology
before
assuming
9
the
position
of
archbishop
of
Buenos
Aires
in
1998
and
10
cardinal
in
2001;
and
11
WHEREAS,
as
pope,
Cardinal
Bergoglio
has
chosen
12
the
name
Francis,
in
honor
of
the
13th
century
saint
13
known
for
the
compassion
he
showed
to
the
vulnerable
——
14
especially
poor
people,
sick
people,
and
animals;
and
15
WHEREAS,
Pope
Francis
brings
to
the
papacy
his
sense
16
of
austerity
and
humility,
and
his
compassion
on
issues
17
such
as
poverty;
NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate,
on
19
behalf
of
Iowans
of
all
faiths,
honors
the
election
20
of
Pope
Francis
as
the
266th
pontiff
of
the
Roman
21
Catholic
Church,
and
wishes
him
a
long
and
successful
22
papacy;
and
23
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
Secretary
of
the
24
Senate
is
directed
to
provide
a
copy
of
this
Resolution
25
to
his
holiness
Pope
Francis.
