statue

Norman
Borlaug
in
our
nation’s
Capitol
and

recognizing
March
25,
2014,
as
National
Agriculture

Day
in
the
United
States.

WHEREAS,
Norman
Borlaug
was
born
on
March
25,
1914,
5
on
a
farm
in
Howard
County,
and
attended
kindergarten
6
through
8th
grade
in
a
one-room
school
house
and
then
7
was
a
star
wrestler
at
Cresco
High
School;
and
8
WHEREAS,
Dr.
Borlaug
was
a
distinguished
graduate
of
9
a
United
States
land-grant
university
and
served
on
the
10
faculty
of
another
land-grant
university,
and
as
such
11
reflects
the
great
achievements
of
that
superb
national
12
educational
system;
and
13
WHEREAS,
Dr.
Borlaug,
a
1970
Nobel
Peace
Prize
14
Laureate,
the
World
Food
Prize
founder,
and
the
“Father
15
of
the
Green
Revolution”
saved
an
estimated
one
billion
16
lives
with
his
advances
in
wheat
science;
and
17
WHEREAS,
among
his
numerous
awards
and
accolades
Dr.
18
Borlaug
was
awarded
both
the
United
States
Presidential
19
Medal
of
Freedom
and
the
Congressional
Gold
Medal,
20
America’s
highest
civilian
honors,
for
his
prodigious
21
accomplishments
in
fighting
hunger;
and
22
WHEREAS,
as
each
state
is
allowed
two
statues
of
23
notable
citizens
to
be
displayed
in
the
United
States
24
Capitol’s
Statuary
Hall,
the
Iowa
General
Assembly
in
25
2011
authorized
the
commission
of
a
statue
honoring
Dr.
26
Borlaug;
and
27
WHEREAS,
in
March
2011,
the
Iowa
General
Assembly

unanimously
passed,
and
the
Governor
signed,
a
1
resolution
placing
a
statue
of
Dr.
Borlaug
in
the
2
United
States
Capitol
in
Washington,
D.C.,
and
the

Governor
then
appointed
a
committee
to
raise
the
funds
4
to
commission
an
artist
to
create
such
a
statue;
and
5
WHEREAS,
donations
from
generous
benefactors
have
6
covered
all
expenses
in
creating
and
transporting
the
7
statue;
and
8
WHEREAS,
March
25,
2014,
is
National
Agriculture
Day
9
throughout
the
United
States
and
the
100th
anniversary
10
of
Dr.
Borlaug’s
birth;
and
11
WHEREAS,
the
bronze
statue
of
Dr.
Borlaug
will
be
12
unveiled
at
the
U.S.
Capitol
on
March
25,
2014,
as
one
13
of
two
statues
that
represent
the
state
of
Iowa
in
14
Statuary
Hall;
NOW
THEREFORE,
15
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
16
recognizes
March
25,
2014,
as
National
Agriculture
Day
17
in
the
United
States
and
celebrates
the
life’s
work
and
18
memory
of
Dr.
Norman
Borlaug,
soon
to
be
memorialized
19
by
a
statue
in
our
nation’s
Capitol.
