Senate Resolution 102 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102 BY BEALL and KAPUCIAN A Resolution honoring the over 200 years of peace, 1 prosperity, and kinship between the peoples of 2 Canada and the United States, and recognizing 3 February 4, 2014, as Canada Day at the Iowa Capitol. 4 WHEREAS, Canada and the United States share a 5 5,500-mile border, the world’s longest unmilitarized 6 border, over which 300,000 people cross between the 7 countries every day; and 8 WHEREAS, our two nations share a peaceful and 9 democratic heritage which spans centuries; and 10 WHEREAS, with these shared traditions, values, and 11 heritage our two nations have fostered one of the most 12 successful international relationships in the modern 13 world; and 14 WHEREAS, acting as partners in peace and allies in 15 war, for over 100 years Canada and the United States 16 have stood together, promoting mutual prosperity and 17 fighting tyranny and terrorism in a partnership that 18 remains resolute today; and 19 WHEREAS, the United States is Canada’s largest 20 export market, with two-way trade in goods and 21 services between the nations totaling $710 billion, or 22 approximately $1.4 million every minute, reflecting the 23 deep integration of our nations’ economies; and 24 WHEREAS, the relationship between Canada and 25 Iowa is equally strong, consisting of a complex and 26 growing network of social, economic, and even familial 27 ties; and 28 -1- LSB 5689SS (3) 85 jr/rj 1/ 2
S.R. 102 WHEREAS, it is estimated that over 100,000 jobs 1 in Iowa are supported by Canada-United States trade 2 and 3,700 Iowans are employed by Canadian-owned 3 businesses; and 4 WHEREAS, Canada is Iowa’s top export market, 5 with Iowa exports to Canada valued annually at $4.3 6 billion and Iowa imports from Canada valued at $3.1 7 billion; and 8 WHEREAS, Iowa exports to Canada include steel 9 products, oilseed cake and meal, organic chemicals, 10 air conditioning and refrigeration units, and 11 tractors, while Iowa imports include natural gas, oils, 12 fertilizers, live animals, and steel products; NOW 13 THEREFORE, 14 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 15 honors the relationships between the peoples and the 16 governments of Canada, the United States, and Iowa, 17 friends and neighbors in peace, allies in war, and 18 partners in economic prosperity; and 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That in honor of our strong 20 and growing relationship, the Senate recognizes 21 Tuesday, February 4, 2014, as Canada Day at the Iowa 22 Capitol. 23 -2- LSB 5689SS (3) 85 jr/rj 2/ 2
