S.F. _____ H.F. _____ Section 1. Section 152A.2, subsection 1, Code 2014, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 1. An applicant shall be issued a license to practice 3 dietetics by the board when the applicant satisfies all of the 4 following: 5 a. Possesses a baccalaureate degree or postbaccalaureate 6 degree with a major course of study in human nutrition, food 7 and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management, or 8 in an equivalent major course of study which meets minimum 9 academic requirements as established by the American dietetic 10 association accreditation council for education in nutrition 11 and dietetics of the academy of nutrition and dietetics and 12 approved by the board. 13 b. Completes an internship or preplanned professional 14 experience program accredited competency-based supervised 15 experience program approved by the American dietetic 16 association accreditation council for education in nutrition 17 and dietetics of the academy of nutrition and dietetics and 18 approved by the board. 19 c. Satisfactorily completes an the commission on dietetic 20 registration of the academy of nutrition and dietetics 21 examination designed approved by the board. 22 Sec. 2. Section 152A.3, subsection 2, Code 2014, is amended 23 to read as follows: 24 2. Dietetics students who engage in clinical practice under 25 the supervision of a dietitian as part of a dietetic education 26 program approved or accredited by the American dietetic 27 association or a competency-based supervised experience 28 program approved by the accreditation council for education 29 in nutrition and dietetics of the academy of nutrition and 30 dietetics . 31 Sec. 3. Section 152A.3, subsection 4, paragraph b, Code 32 2014, is amended to read as follows: 33 b. S.F. _____ H.F. _____ education, or postgraduate education which is sponsored by 1 a dietetic education program or accredited by the American 2 dietetic association and carried out in an educational 3 institution or its affiliated clinical facility or health 4 care agency, or before a group of licensed dietitians a 5 competency-based supervised experience program approved by the 6 accreditation council for education in nutrition and dietetics 7 of the academy of nutrition and dietetics . 8 EXPLANATION 9 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 10 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 11 This bill relates to licensure requirements for dietetics. 12 The bill changes references from the American dietetic 13 association to the academy of nutrition and dietetics to 14 reflect the association’s name change. The bill also specifies 15 that the accreditation council for education in nutrition 16 and dietetics is the credentialing agency within the academy 17 of nutrition and dietetics. Further, the bill states that 18 a dietitian, to obtain licensure in Iowa, must complete an 19 examination approved by both the academy of nutrition and 20 dietetics and the board of dietetics rather than just the 21 board. The bill allows an exemption from licensure for 22 dietetic students engaged in a competency-based supervised 23 experience program approved by the academy of nutrition 24 and dietetics and for dietitians conducting a teaching 25 demonstration in connection with clinical education sponsored 26 by a competency-based supervised experience program, rather 27 than just a dietetic education program. 28 -2- LSB 5310XD (5) 85 ad/nh 2/ 2
