House Resolution 6 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 6 BY MURPHY A Resolution to preserve Social Security. 1 WHEREAS, the Social Security program is an extremely 2 successful social program that permits senior citizens 3 in America to retire with dignity and security after a 4 lifetime of hard work; and 5 WHEREAS, many senior citizens would fall into 6 poverty without Social Security; and 7 WHEREAS, the security of private pension plans is 8 the subject of increased uncertainty; and 9 WHEREAS, job losses have rendered many Americans 10 ineligible for an employer-based pension; and 11 WHEREAS, with the decline of “defined benefit” 12 pensions, 401(k) plans, known in the industry as 13 “defined contribution” plans, are the most common type 14 of pension, providing a varying and uncertain source 15 of retirement income; and 16 WHEREAS, Social Security is essential to provide a 17 stable income supplement; and 18 WHEREAS, Social Security provides needed disability 19 and survivors benefits; and 20 WHEREAS, Social Security creates a national sense of 21 community; NOW THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 23 That the House of Representatives affirms the need to 24 strengthen Social Security’s long-term finances for the 25 future to ensure that it remains a reliable, guaranteed 26 benefit for retirement, disability insurance, and 27 survivors income. 28 -1- LSB 1098HH (3) 85 jr/nh 1/ 1
