the
month
of
April
2013
as

Genocide
Awareness
Month.

WHEREAS,
starting
in
the
18th
century,
the
world
3
entered
an
age
of
science,
an
age
of
enlightenment,
and
4
age
of
prosperity
and
peace;
and
5
WHEREAS,
this
new
age
also
brought
misery
and
6
death,
including
the
destruction
of
the
Native
7
American
peoples
and
their
cultures,
the
degradation
8
and
massacre
of
Africans
transported
to
America
in
9
bondage,
the
Musa
Dagh
resistance
in
1915
followed
by
10
the
Armenian
persecution,
the
Rape
of
Nanking
in
1937,
11
the
Holocaust
of
the
1930s
and
1940s,
the
killings
in
12
Cambodia
in
1975,
the
massacres
in
Bosnia
in
1992,
13
the
slaughter
in
Rwanda
in
1994,
and
now
in
the
21st
14
century
the
displacements
and
deaths
in
Darfur;
and
15
WHEREAS,
all
of
these
tragedies,
separated
by
time
16
and
distance,
have
one
common
thread,
the
murder
of
17
men,
women,
and
children,
young
and
old
alike,
based
18
only
on
where
they
lived,
what
God
they
worshipped,
19
what
language
they
spoke,
or
to
what
community
they

belonged;
and

WHEREAS,
this
phenomenon
of
organized
mass
murder
2
was
given
a
unique
name,
genocide,
in
the
last
3
century;
and
4
WHEREAS,
in
the
last
100
years
genocide
has
5
brought
death
and
destruction
to
tens
of
millions
of
6
people;
and
7
WHEREAS,
in
the
dawn
of
the
21st
century
the
world
8
community
must
dedicate
itself
to
the
task
of
ending
9
genocide,
and
creating
the
age
of
prosperity
and
peace
10
that
was
dreamed
of
over
a
century
ago;
NOW
THEREFORE,
11
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
12
the
House
of
Representatives
recognizes
the
month
of
13
April
2013
as
Genocide
Awareness
Month
and
urges
Iowa’s
14
schools,
universities,
and
civic
organizations
to
raise
15
public
awareness
of
the
history
and
horror
of
genocide
16
and
encourages
public
debate
on
how
genocide
may
be
17
eliminated.
