recognizing
the
sesquicentennial
of
the

American
Veterinary
Medical
Association
and
honoring

the
work
of
America’s
veterinarians.

WHEREAS,
the
American
Veterinary
Medical
Association
4
was
founded
in
1863
as
the
United
States
Veterinary
5
Medical
Association
in
New
York
City;
and
6
WHEREAS,
the
year
2013
will
mark
the
150th
7
anniversary
of
organized
veterinary
medicine
in
the
8
United
States;
and
9
WHEREAS,
veterinarians
have
played
an
integral
role
10
in
discovering
the
causes
of
numerous
diseases
that
11
affect
our
state’s
citizens
such
as
salmonellosis,
West
12
Nile
infection,
yellow
fever,
and
malaria;
and
13
WHEREAS,
veterinarians
provide
valuable
public
14
health
services
through
preventive
medicine,
control
of
15
zoonotic
diseases,
and
scientific
research;
and
16
WHEREAS,
veterinarians
have
advanced
human
and
17
animal
health
by
inventing
and
refining
techniques
and
18
instrumentations
such
as
artificial
hips,
bone
plates,
19
splints,
and
arthroscopy;
and
20
WHEREAS,
veterinarians
play
an
integral
role
in
21
protecting
the
quality
and
security
of
our
national
22
herd
and
food
supply;
and
23
WHEREAS,
military
veterinarians
provide
crucial
24
support
to
our
nation’s
military
and
assistance
to
the
25
agricultural
independence
of
developing
nations
around

world;
and

WHEREAS,
disaster
relief
veterinarians
provide

public
health
services
and
veterinary
medical
support

to
animals
and
humans
displaced
and
ravaged
by

disasters;
and

WHEREAS,
veterinarians
are
dedicated
to
preserving
6
the
human-animal
bond
and
promoting
the
highest
7
standards
of
science-based,
ethical
animal
welfare;
and
8
WHEREAS,
veterinarian
colleagues
from
around
the
9
world
will
join
veterinarians
in
the
United
States
to
10
celebrate
this
momentous
occasion;
NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,

That
the
House
of
Representatives
expresses
deep
13
appreciation
for
the
contributions
that
the
veterinary
14
profession
and
the
American
Veterinary
Medical
15
Association
have
made
and
continue
to
make
to
animal
16
health,
public
health,
animal
welfare,
and
food
safety
17
in
Iowa.
