House Resolution 122 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 122 BY KAUFMANN A Resolution recognizing the Hoover Uncommon Public 1 Service Award winner for 2014, Representative Steven 2 Olson. 3 WHEREAS, Herbert Hoover was both a visionary and 4 dedicated public servant and through his tireless 5 efforts millions of lives were saved in the years after 6 World War I; and 7 WHEREAS, to honor that spirit of public service the 8 Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association has 9 created the Hoover Uncommon Public Service Award; and 10 WHEREAS, the association annually presents 11 the Hoover Uncommon Public Service Award to Iowa 12 legislators who exemplify President Hoover’s 13 humanitarian efforts and have gone above and beyond 14 the call of duty to demonstrate uncommon service and 15 commitment to the people of Iowa; and 16 WHEREAS, the award takes its name from a 1948 speech 17 in which the former President said, “Let us remember 18 that the great human advances have not been brought 19 about by distinctly mediocre men and women. They were 20 brought about by distinctly uncommon people with vital 21 sparks of leadership.”; and 22 WHEREAS, in 2014, the association awarded the 23 eighth annual Hoover Uncommon Public Service Award to 24 Representative Steven Olson of DeWitt, Iowa; and 25 WHEREAS, Representative Steven Olson is committed to 26 the constituents in his district and works for the best 27 interests of those he represents; and 28 -1- LSB 6202YH (2) 85 jr/nh 1/ 2

H.R. 122 WHEREAS, Representative Olson is held in the highest 1 regard in his community and by the state legislature 2 where he has earned respect on both sides of the aisle, 3 as he diligently sought out the best solutions for the 4 state; and 5 WHEREAS, Representative Olson exhibits an uncommon 6 valor, a rare temperament, and an exceptional heart for 7 service; NOW THEREFORE, 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 9 That the House of Representatives thanks the Herbert 10 Hoover Presidential Library Association for the 11 creation of the Hoover Uncommon Public Service Award 12 and congratulates Representative Olson on receiving the 13 2014 award. 14 -2- LSB 6202YH (2) 85 jr/nh 2/ 2
