WHEREAS,
March
29,
2014,
marks
the
93rd
Anniversary
5
of
the
adoption
of
the
Iowa
State
Flag
by
the
39th
Iowa
6
General
Assembly;
and
7
WHEREAS,
Knoxville
is
known
as
the
birthplace
of
the
8
Iowa
State
Flag;
and
9
WHEREAS,
Dixie
Cornell
Gebhardt,
the
daughter
of
a
10
Civil
War
veteran,
was
born
on
November
18,
1866,
in
11
Knoxville,
lived
most
of
her
life
in
Iowa,
and
died
in
12
Knoxville
on
October
16,
1955;
and
13
WHEREAS,
Dixie
Gebhardt,
along
with
other
members
14
of
the
Mary
Marion
Chapter
of
the
Daughters
of
the
15
Revolution
of
Knoxville,
designed
the
Iowa
flag
in
16
1917;
and
17
WHEREAS,
the
Honorable
Terry
Branstad,
Governor
of
18
the
State
of
Iowa,
has
proclaimed
March
29,
2014,
as
19
Iowa
State
Flag
Day;
and
20
WHEREAS,
the
blue
stripe
of
the
banner
stands
for
21
loyalty,
justice,
and
truth,
the
broad
white
stripe
for
22
purity,
and
the
red
stripe
for
courage;
and
23
WHEREAS,
the
eagle
carries
blue
streamers
inscribed
24
with
the
state
motto,
“Our
Liberties
We
Prize
and
Our
25
Rights
We
Will
Maintain”,
thus
combining
our
national
26
symbol
with
our
state
motto;
NOW
THEREFORE,
