Resolution
commemorating
July
11th
as
the
anniversary
1
of
the
Srebrenica
genocide.

WHEREAS,
on
July
11,
1995,
the
eastern
Bosnian
town
3
of
Srebrenica
fell
to
the
Bosnian
Serb
forces;
and
4
WHEREAS,
during
the
next
several
days
of
carnage
5
more
than
8,000
Muslim
men
and
boys
were
summarily
6
executed
by
Bosnian
Serb
forces;
and
7
WHEREAS,
approximately
20
percent
of
Srebrenica’s
8
total
population
at
the
time,
at
least
7,000
and
9
perhaps
thousands
more,
was
either
executed
or
10
otherwise
killed;
and
11
WHEREAS,
in
spite
of
the
enormous
efforts
made
12
to
date
to
discover
and
exhume
mass
and
individual
13
graves
and
identify
the
bodies
of
the
victims,
14
the
searches
conducted
up
until
now
do
not
offer
a
15
complete
reconstruction
of
the
events
in
and
around
16
Srebrenica;
and
17
WHEREAS,
the
massacre
at
Srebrenica
was
among
the
18
worst
of
many
horrible
atrocities
to
occur
in
the
19
conflict
in
Bosnia
and
Herzegovina,
which
ultimately
20
led
to
the
displacement
of
more
than
2,000,000
people,
21
with
an
estimated
200,000
killed;
NOW
THEREFORE,
22
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,

That
the
House
of
Representatives
commemorates
July
24
11th
in
remembrance
of
the
Srebrenica
genocide
and
25
urges
all
Iowans
to
consider
the
horror
of
genocide
26
and
to
actively
support
efforts
to
eliminate
this
most
27
terrible
of
crimes.
