H.F. 2228 Section 1. Section 216.2, subsection 6, Code 2014, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 6. “Employee” means any person employed by an employer. 3 “Employee” includes a student participating in an internship, 4 regardless of whether the student receives compensation. 5 Sec. 2. Section 216.2, Code 2014, is amended by adding the 6 following new subsections: 7 NEW SUBSECTION . 10A. “Internship” means temporary 8 employment of a student that focuses on providing the student 9 with work experience. 10 NEW SUBSECTION . 14A. “Student” means an individual enrolled 11 in an educational institution as defined in section 216.9, 12 subsection 2. 13 EXPLANATION 14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 16 This bill provides that the definition of “employee” for 17 purposes of Code chapter 216, the Iowa civil rights Act, 18 includes a student enrolled in an educational institution and 19 participating in an internship, regardless of whether the 20 student receives compensation. The bill defines “internship”, 21 “student”, and “educational institution”.
