S.F. _____ H.F. _____ Section 1. Section 124.553, subsection 1, Code Supplement 1 2011, is amended by adding the following new paragraph: 2 NEW PARAGRAPH . d. A prescription database or monitoring 3 program in another jurisdiction pursuant to subsection 8. 4 Sec. 2. Section 124.553, Code Supplement 2011, is amended by 5 adding the following new subsection: 6 NEW SUBSECTION . 8. The board may enter into agreements for 7 the mutual exchange of information among prescription database 8 or monitoring programs in other jurisdictions. Any agreement 9 entered into pursuant to this subsection shall specify that all 10 the information exchanged shall be used and disseminated in 11 accordance with the laws of this state. 12 EXPLANATION 13 This bill relates to the exchange of information among 14 prescription databases and monitoring programs. 15 The bill authorizes the board of pharmacy to enter into 16 agreements with other jurisdictions in order to exchange 17 information from the Iowa prescription monitoring program with 18 similar programs in other jurisdictions. 19 The bill requires that any agreement entered into shall 20 specify that all the information exchanged shall be used and 21 disseminated in accordance with the laws of this state. 22 The Iowa prescription monitoring program is used by 23 prescribing practitioners and pharmacists on a need-to-know 24 basis for facilitating early identification of patients who 25 may be at risk for addiction, or who may be using, abusing, 26 or diverting drugs for unlawful or otherwise unauthorized 27 purposes. 28 -1- LSB 5223DP (3) 84 jm/nh 1/ 1
