A
Resolution
of
condolence
to
the
people
of
Japan.
1
WHEREAS,
for
over
five
decades
the
peoples
of
2
Japan
and
Iowa
have
strengthened
their
friendships
3
through
the
cultivation
of
educational,
cultural,
4
interpersonal,
and
commercial
relationships,
creating
5
a
bond
ever
stronger
as
the
years
passed,
and
for
that
6
reason
a
tragedy
for
the
people
of
Japan
is
a
tragedy
7
for
Iowans
as
well;
and
8
WHEREAS,
the
people
of
Japan
have
been
afflicted
9
with
a
triple
calamity:
an
earthquake,
a
tsunami,
and
10
a
nuclear
energy
accident;
and
11
WHEREAS,
in
spite
of
the
incalculable
suffering
12
and
loss,
the
strength
of
the
Japanese
people
remains
13
unbroken,
as
rescuers
work
around
the
clock
to
bring
14
aid,
comfort,
and
safety
to
the
countless
victims;
and
15
WHEREAS,
the
people
of
Iowa
pay
special
homage
16
to
the
courage
and
honor
of
the
so-called
“Fukushima
17
Fifty”,
that
group
of
180
technicians
who
have
18
continuously
rotated
shifts
at
the
stricken
reactor,
19
despite
the
risk
to
their
own
safety;
and
20
WHEREAS,
in
this
darkest
of
times,
the
people
of
21
Iowa
now
stand
firm
and
ready
with
the
people
of
Japan
22
to
undertake
the
work
of
recovery;
NOW
THEREFORE,
23
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate,
on
24
behalf
of
the
people
of
Iowa,
expresses
its
sorrow,
25
and
offers
its
deepest
sympathy
to
those
who
have
lost
26
their
loved
ones,
their
homes,
and
their
livelihoods
in
27
this
most
terrible
of
disasters.
