SMITH , SWAIM , ISENHART , MASSIE , KEARNS , FRY , HEDDENS , HAGENOW , WILLEMS , WINDSCHITL , SODERBERG , MURPHY , HUSEMAN , and KELLEY A Resolution honoring the Main Street Iowa Program on 1 its 25th anniversary. 2 WHEREAS, the Main Street Four Point Approach was 3 conceived in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic 4 Preservation in Washington, D.C., and in 1985, the 5 Iowa General Assembly adopted the National Main 6 Street Center’s approach to downtown revitalization 7 by approving the establishment of the Main Street 8 Iowa Program within the Iowa Department of Economic 9 Development; and 10 WHEREAS, 63 cities have participated since 11 1986, 47 Iowa Main Street communities are currently 12 participating, and there are 45 active Main Street 13 programs in Iowa; and 14 WHEREAS, on April 1, 2011, the Main Street Iowa 15 Program celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Annual 16 Main Street Awards ceremony, and recognized outstanding 17 volunteers and the “45 Best of the Best from 1986-2011” 18 in design, organization, promotion, and economic 19 restructuring; and 20 WHEREAS, Iowa hosted the National Trust for Historic 21 Preservation National Main Streets Conference held in 22 Des Moines from May 22-25, 2011, and Main Street Iowa 23 acted as a key conference coordinating partner; and 24 -1- LSB 2814HH (6) 84 kh/sc 1/ 2

H.R. 59 WHEREAS, in its 25-year history, Main Street Iowa 1 has tracked more than $1 billion in private investment 2 in the purchase, construction, and rehabilitation 3 of downtown property in participating commercial 4 districts, significantly increasing the state’s job and 5 business base; NOW THEREFORE, 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 7 That the House of Representatives congratulates the 8 Main Street Iowa Program as it celebrates its 25th 9 anniversary and thanks those who have worked nearly 10 two million volunteer hours to make this program a 11 resounding success. 12 -2- LSB 2814HH (6) 84 kh/sc 2/ 2
