SMITH , KRESSIG , JACOBY , HEDDENS , QUIRK , MUHLBAUER , WENTHE , ISENHART , HUNTER , STECKMAN , and KAJTAZOVIC A Resolution opposing the Paul Ryan Medicare plan. 1 WHEREAS, the United States Congress has recently 2 debated and continues to consider the Paul Ryan 3 Medicare plan; and 4 WHEREAS, the Iowa House of Representatives disagrees 5 with Governor Branstad on his public support of the 6 Paul Ryan Medicare plan; and 7 WHEREAS, the Paul Ryan Medicare plan would have a 8 negative effect on America’s senior citizens: it would 9 effectively end our current Medicare system, forcing 10 many Iowa seniors to find coverage on their own, and 11 for those unable to afford essential services, those 12 seniors would pay almost double —— more than $12,510 a 13 year, and forcing nearly 4 million seniors nationally 14 to pay an additional $2.2 billion for prescription 15 drugs next year alone; and 16 WHEREAS, the Paul Ryan Medicare plan gives 17 government the power to deny care; and 18 WHEREAS, the Paul Ryan Medicare plan was called 19 “radical” and “right-wing social engineering” by 20 Newt Gingrich, former U.S. Speaker of the House; NOW 21 -1- LSB 2816YH (5) 84 jr/nh 1/ 2

H.R. 58 THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 23 the House of Representatives respectfully expresses its 24 opposition to the Paul Ryan Medicare plan, and requests 25 that Iowa’s congressional delegation work to prevent 26 its enactment into law; and 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the 28 House of Representatives shall distribute copies of 1 this resolution to the members of Iowa’s congressional 2 delegation. 3 -2- LSB 2816YH (5) 84 jr/nh 2/ 2
