MILLER , RAYHONS , WATTS , TJEPKES , DEYOE , DE BOEF , ANDERSON , HELLAND , UPMEYER , WAGNER , and KOESTER A Resolution recognizing the University of Iowa 1 Writers’ Workshop and its 75th anniversary. 2 WHEREAS, the Program in Creative Writing at the 3 University of Iowa, better known as the Iowa Writers’ 4 Workshop, was founded in 1936 and now celebrates its 5 75th anniversary; and 6 WHEREAS, the program was formally founded under the 7 leadership of Wilbur Schramm and came into prominence 8 during the 24-year tenure of Paul Engle; and 9 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop 10 was the first creative writing degree program in the 11 United States and is still the model for contemporary 12 writing programs; and 13 WHEREAS, workshop alumni have collectively 14 published more than 3,500 books of fiction, poetry, 15 and nonfiction and alumni have won 17 Pulitzer Prizes, 16 numerous National Book Awards, and other major literary 17 honors; and 18 WHEREAS, the workshop inspired the creation of 19 -1- LSB 2773HH (6) 84 jr/rj 1/ 2
H.R. 53 a variety of important University of Iowa writing 1 programs, including the International Writing 2 Program, the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, the top-ranked 3 Nonfiction Writing Program, the Iowa Summer Writing 4 Festival, and the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio; and 5 WHEREAS, today the Iowa Writers’ Workshop admits 6 up to 50 graduate students each year for a two-year 7 residency program awarding a Master of Fine Arts 8 degree; NOW THEREFORE, 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 10 the members of the House of Representatives, with great 11 pride, congratulate the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for 75 12 years of literary excellence and send their best wishes 13 for the workshop’s 75th Anniversary Reunion scheduled 14 for June 9-12, 2011, in Iowa City. 15 -2- LSB 2773HH (6) 84 jr/rj 2/ 2
