Workshop
and
its
75th
anniversary.

WHEREAS,
the
Program
in
Creative
Writing
at
the
3
University
of
Iowa,
better
known
as
the
Iowa
Writers’
4
Workshop,
was
founded
in
1936
and
now
celebrates
its
5
75th
anniversary;
and
6
WHEREAS,
the
program
was
formally
founded
under
the
7
leadership
of
Wilbur
Schramm
and
came
into
prominence
8
during
the
24-year
tenure
of
Paul
Engle;
and
9
WHEREAS,
the
University
of
Iowa
Writers’
Workshop
10
was
the
first
creative
writing
degree
program
in
the
11
United
States
and
is
still
the
model
for
contemporary
12
writing
programs;
and
13
WHEREAS,
workshop
alumni
have
collectively
14
published
more
than
3,500
books
of
fiction,
poetry,
15
and
nonfiction
and
alumni
have
won
17
Pulitzer
Prizes,
16
numerous
National
Book
Awards,
and
other
major
literary
17
honors;
and
18
WHEREAS,
the
workshop
inspired
the
creation
of

International
Writing

Program,

Iowa
Playwrights
Workshop,
the
top-ranked

Iowa
Young
Writers’
Studio;
and

WHEREAS,
today
the
Iowa
Writers’
Workshop
admits

up
to
50
graduate
students
each
year
for
a
two-year

residency
program
awarding
a
Master
of
Fine
Arts

degree;
NOW
THEREFORE,

IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That

members
of
the

of
Representatives,
