WHEREAS,
Salvatore
Augustine
Giunta
is
a
life-long

Iowan,
born
in
Clinton
and
raised
in
Cedar
Rapids
and
5
Hiawatha;
and
6
WHEREAS,
Staff
Sergeant
Giunta
enlisted
in
the
7
United
States
Army
in
2003
and
has
served
two
tours
of
8
duty
in
Afghanistan;
and
9
WHEREAS,
on
October
25,
2007,
Staff
Sergeant
Giunta
10
was
in
the
desolate
Korengal
Valley
in
Afghanistan
as
11
part
of
a
patrol
with
other
soldiers
of
Company
B,
2nd
12
Battalion,
503rd
Infantry
Regiment,
173rd
Airborne
13
Brigade,
United
States
Army;
and
14
WHEREAS,
when
ambushed
by
heavily
armed
Taliban
15
insurgents,
Staff
Sergeant
Giunta
acted
only
for
the
16
protection
of
his
wounded
comrades,
engaging
the
enemy,
17
pulling
the
wounded
from
the
line
of
fire,
and
rescuing
18
a
wounded
soldier
from
certain
capture;
and
19
WHEREAS,
the
Medal
of
Honor
is
the
highest
award
20
for
valor
in
action
against
an
enemy
force
which
can
21
be
bestowed
upon
a
soldier
serving
in
the
armed
forces
22
of
the
United
States;
and
23
WHEREAS,
for
his
selfless
and
courageous
actions
24
Staff
Sergeant
Giunta
was
awarded
the
Medal
of
Honor
by
25
President
Barack
Obama
on
November
16,
2010;
and
26
WHEREAS,
Staff
Sergeant
Giunta
is
the
first
living
27
Medal
of
Honor
recipient
since
Vietnam;
NOW

state’s
native
son
Salvatore
Augustine

Giunta,

soldier
both
courageous
and
humble,
whose

actions
bring
honor
to
himself
and
all
the
soldiers
of

the
173rd
Airborne
Brigade,
and
expresses
its
gratitude

for
his
service
to
his
comrades
and
his
country.
