Resolution
to
honor
the
service
and
sacrifice
of

Keokuk
County
Deputy
Sheriff
Eric
Stein.

WHEREAS,
the
recent
killing
of
a
local
peace
officer
3
tragically
reminds
us
of
the
dangers
that
peace
4
officers
face
every
day
and
the
price
that
is
sometimes
5
demanded
of
those
who
stand
in
harm’s
way
to
protect
6
us;
and
7
WHEREAS,
on
April
4,
2011,
the
highest
price
was
8
paid
by
Sergeant
Eric
Stein,
a
Deputy
Sheriff
in
Keokuk
9
County
and
an
eleven-year
veteran
of
the
Sheriff’s
10
Department,
when
he
was
slain
in
the
line
of
duty
while
11
protecting
the
public;
and
12
WHEREAS,
Sergeant
Stein
is
the
first
peace
officer
13
slain
in
the
line
of
duty
in
Iowa
since
1985;
and
14
WHEREAS,
Sergeant
Stein
was
a
career
law
enforcement
15
officer
who
lived
to
serve
the
community
as
a
volunteer
16
firefighter,
as
an
emergency
medical
technician,
and
17
as
a
sheriff's
deputy;
and
18
WHEREAS,
Sergeant
Stein
has
now
been
laid
to
rest,
19
leaving
behind
a
nine-year-old
daughter,
reminding
us
20
that
it
is
not
only
the
officer
who
must
pay
the
price
21
of
law
enforcement
service;
and
22
WHEREAS,
in
honor
of
his
memory,
Governor
23
Terry
Branstad
has
ordered
that
flags
be
flown
24
half-staff;
NOW
THEREFORE,
25
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,

That
the
House
of
Representatives
mourns
the
loss
of
27
Sergeant
Eric
Stein,
a
true
hero,
whose
service
and

be
forgotten;
and

BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
House
of

Representatives
extends
the
condolences
of
each
member

of
the
House
to
Sergeant
Stein’s
young
daughter,
his

extended
family
and
friends,
the
men
and
women
of
5
the
Keokuk
County
Sheriff’s
Department,
and
to
the
6
communities
of
Keokuk
County.
