TAYLOR , THEDE , THOMAS , TJEPKES , UPMEYER , VAN ENGELENHOVEN , VANDER LINDEN , WAGNER , WATTS , WENTHE , WESSEL-KROESCHELL , WILLEMS , WINCKLER , WINDSCHITL , WITTNEBEN , WOLFE , and WORTHAN A Resolution of condolence to the people of Japan. 1 WHEREAS, for over five decades the peoples of 2 Japan and Iowa have strengthened their friendships 3 through the cultivation of interpersonal and commercial 4 relationships, creating a bond ever stronger as the 5 years passed, and for that reason a tragedy for the 6 people of Japan is a tragedy for Iowans as well; and 7 WHEREAS, the people of Japan have been afflicted 8 with a triple calamity: an earthquake, a tsunami, and 9 -1- LSB 2744HH (2) 84 jr/rj 1/ 2
H.R. 34 a nuclear energy accident; and 1 WHEREAS, in spite of the incalculable suffering 2 and loss, the strength of the Japanese people remains 3 unbroken, as rescuers work around the clock to bring 4 aid, comfort, and safety to the countless victims; and 5 WHEREAS, the people of Iowa pay special homage 6 to the courage and honor of the so-called “Fukushima 7 Fifty”, that group of 180 technicians who have 8 continuously rotated shifts at the stricken reactor, 9 despite the risk to their own safety; and 10 WHEREAS, in this darkest of times, the people of 11 Iowa now stand firm and ready with the people of Japan 12 to undertake the work of recovery; NOW THEREFORE, 13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 14 the House of Representatives, on behalf of the people 15 of Iowa, expresses its sorrow, and offers its deepest 16 sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones, their 17 homes, and their livelihoods in this most terrible of 18 disasters. 19 -2- LSB 2744HH (2) 84 jr/rj 2/ 2
