House Resolution 136 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 136 BY UPMEYER and KAUFMANN A Resolution honoring the courage, determination, and 1 dedication of Cheyanne Boddicker in swimming the 2 English Channel. 3 WHEREAS, the English Channel is a cold, unforgiving 4 body of water and is one of the busiest shipping lanes 5 in the world; and 6 WHEREAS, undaunted by this challenge Iowa native 7 Cheyanne Boddicker swam the channel, not for fame 8 or glory, but to raise donations for the Holden 9 Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of 10 Iowa; and 11 WHEREAS, her dedication was in part motivated by 12 the passing of her grandfather, who was one of almost 13 600,000 people in the United States to die from cancer 14 in 2010; and 15 WHEREAS, Miss Boddicker trained intensively for over 16 a year, guided by her brother, Staff Sergeant Michael 17 Boddicker, and assisted by family and friends; and 18 WHEREAS, that intensive training included a grueling 19 regimen of weight training, aerobic conditioning, and 20 endless swimming, including trips to Lake Michigan to 21 become acclimated to cold water; and 22 WHEREAS, Miss Boddicker, recognized by the Channel 23 Swimming Association as the 877th person to officially 24 swim the channel, made the 21-nautical-mile crossing 25 in a straight swim with an official time of 15 hours 26 and 39 minutes, not taking a break or wearing a wetsuit 27 in the 61-degree water; and 28 -1- LSB 6109HH (8) 84 jr/rj 1/ 2
H.R. 136 WHEREAS, Miss Boddicker is believed to be the first 1 female Iowan to swim the channel; and 2 WHEREAS, her ultimate goal, well over halfway met, 3 is to raise $25,000 for the center; NOW THEREFORE, 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 5 the House of Representatives congratulates Cheyanne 6 Boddicker for her courage in swimming the English 7 Channel, and honors her humanitarian efforts in the 8 fight against cancer. 9 -2- LSB 6109HH (8) 84 jr/rj 2/ 2
