recognizing

honoring
the
work

the

Alzheimer’s
Association.

WHEREAS,
Alzheimer’s
disease,
a
progressive
3
neurodegenerative
brain
disorder,
tragically
robs
4
individuals
of
their
memories
and
leads
to
progressive
5
mental
and
physical
impairments;
and
6
WHEREAS,
an
estimated
69,000
Iowans
have
Alzheimer’s
7
disease,
and
as
many
as
4
percent
of
those
are
8
individuals
under
age
65
who
have
younger-onset
9
Alzheimer’s
disease;
and
10
WHEREAS,
Alzheimer’s
disease
is
the
fifth
leading
11
cause
of
death
in
Iowa;
and
12
WHEREAS,
this
eventually
fatal
disease
is
a
serious
13
and
growing
threat
to
the
health
of
Iowa;
and
14
WHEREAS,
the
human
cost
of
Alzheimer’s
disease
in
15
Iowa
is
staggering
——
more
than
131,000
caregivers
16
provided
over
150,000
hours
of
unpaid
care
in
2010;
and
17
WHEREAS,
the
annual
cost
to
our
country
in
total
18
payments
for
health
care,
long-term
care,
and
hospice
19
for
people
with
Alzheimer’s
disease
was
$183
billion
in
20
2010;
NOW
THEREFORE,
21
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
22
That
the
House
of
Representatives,
in
recognition
of
23
the
individuals,
families,
friends,
and
caregivers
24
dealing
with
Alzheimer’s
disease
and
the
researchers
25
who
are
seeking
a
cause
or
cure,
recognizes
and
honors
26
the
efforts
of
the
Alzheimer’s
Association
to
educate
27
Iowans,
raise
funds,
and
promote
awareness
to
fight
