H.F. 433 Section 1. Section 262.9, Code 2011, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 36. a. Develop a policy requiring each 3 institution of higher education under the control of the 4 board which offers a learning communities program to offer 5 each student enrolled in the institution the opportunity to 6 participate in the program. 7 b. For purposes of this subsection, “learning communities 8 program” means a program pursuant to which groups of students, 9 based on shared career or academic goals, engage in any of the 10 following activities together: 11 (1) Enrolling in certain courses. 12 (2) Sharing living accommodations. 13 (3) Receiving mentoring, tutoring, or career guidance. 14 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect July 1, 2013. 15 EXPLANATION 16 This bill directs the board of regents to develop a policy 17 requiring each institution of higher education under the 18 control of the board which offers a learning communities 19 program wherein, based on common career or academic goals, 20 groups of students engage in certain activities together, 21 including enrolling in certain courses, sharing living 22 accommodations, or receiving mentoring, tutoring, or career 23 guidance, to offer each student enrolled in the institution the 24 opportunity to participate in the program. 25 The bill is effective July 1, 2013. 26 -1- LSB 2452YH (2) 84 je/nh 1/ 1
