H.F. 317 Section 1. Section 321.196, Code 2011, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 6. At the time a driver’s license is 3 issued or renewed, the licensee may request to be notified in 4 advance of the period for renewal of the driver’s license. The 5 request for a renewal notice shall be accompanied by a fee 6 of ten dollars. At least six weeks but not more than eight 7 weeks before the date the driver’s license is due to expire, 8 the department shall send notice of the expiration date of 9 the license and the period for renewal to a licensee who has 10 requested notification and paid the required fee. The notice 11 shall be mailed to the most recent address of record provided 12 by the licensee pursuant to section 321.182. Failure to 13 receive a renewal notice shall not affect the expiration of a 14 license or the requirements for renewal of an expired license. 15 EXPLANATION 16 This bill allows a person to request to be notified by 17 the department of transportation in advance of the period 18 for renewal of the person’s driver’s license. The request 19 must be made at the time the person’s license is being issued 20 or renewed. The bill establishes a $10 fee for a renewal 21 notice, which is payable at the time the request is made. The 22 department of transportation is required to send the notice to 23 the licensee at least six weeks but not more than eight weeks 24 before the date the driver’s license is due to expire. The 25 notice shall be mailed to the most recent address of record for 26 the licensee and shall remind the licensee of the expiration 27 date and the period for renewal of the license. 28 The bill specifies that the expiration of a license or the 29 requirements for renewal of an expired license are not affected 30 by failure of a licensee to receive a notice. 31 -1- LSB 2266HH (2) 84 dea/nh 1/ 1
