H.F. 2259 Section 1. FEASIBILITY STUDY —— MANUFACTURE OF ESSENTIAL 1 GENERIC PHARMACEUTICALS AT UNIVERSITY OF IOWA FACILITY. The 2 university of Iowa office of the vice president for research, 3 in consultation with the department of public health, shall 4 review and report to the governor and the general assembly no 5 later than November 1, 2012, the feasibility of manufacturing 6 essential generic pharmaceuticals at the United States food 7 and drug administration-approved manufacturing facility 8 located at the university, if one or more pharmaceuticals 9 are found to be periodically or consistently unavailable to 10 health care providers in the state for prescription or direct 11 administration, thereby endangering public health or patient 12 safety. The report shall include recommendations regarding 13 any policies, legislation, or resources necessary to permit 14 such manufacturing if the review finds such manufacturing to be 15 necessary and feasible. 16 EXPLANATION 17 This bill directs the university of Iowa office of the vice 18 president for research, in consultation with the department 19 of public health, to review and report to the governor and 20 the general assembly no later than November 1, 2012, the 21 feasibility of manufacturing essential generic pharmaceuticals 22 at the United States food and drug administration-approved 23 manufacturing facility located at the university, if one 24 or more pharmaceuticals are found to be periodically or 25 consistently unavailable to health care providers in the state 26 for prescription or direct administration, thereby endangering 27 public health or patient safety.
