H.F. 2208 Section 1. Section 272.2, Code Supplement 2011, is amended 1 by adding the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 19. Adopt rules to license as a secondary 3 teacher endorsed to teach only mathematics or science, an 4 applicant who has not graduated from an approved practitioner 5 preparation program but who, at a minimum, holds a bachelor’s 6 degree with a major course of study in mathematics or science 7 from an accredited postsecondary institution; has at least six 8 thousand hours of successful, recent, and relevant employment 9 in a mathematics-related or science-related profession; and 10 successfully passes the educational testing services’ Praxis 11 II subject examination for biology and general science if 12 the endorsement sought is to teach a science course, or the 13 educational testing services’ Praxis II mathematics content 14 and knowledge examination if the endorsement sought is for 15 mathematics. 16 EXPLANATION 17 This bill directs the board of educational examiners to 18 adopt rules to license as a secondary teacher endorsed to teach 19 only mathematics or science, an applicant who has not graduated 20 from an approved practitioner preparation program but who, at a 21 minimum, holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in mathematics 22 or science from an accredited postsecondary institution; has 23 at least 6,000 hours of employment in a mathematics-related 24 or science-related profession; and successfully passes the 25 educational testing services’ Praxis II biology and general 26 science test if the endorsement sought is to teach a science 27 course, or the educational testing services’ Praxis II 28 mathematics content and knowledge test if the endorsement 29 sought is for mathematics. 30 -1- LSB 5560YH (3) 84 kh/rj 1/ 1
