Congress

nutritional

school
meals.

WHEREAS,
the
Richard
B.
Russell
National
School
3
Lunch
Act
and
the
Child
Nutrition
Act
of
1966
were
4
enacted
to
safeguard
the
health
and
well-being
of
the
5
nation’s
children;
and
6
WHEREAS,
a
disproportionate
rise
in
indicators
of
7
poor
health
among
children
is
linked
to
diet;
and
8
WHEREAS,
a
significant
percentage
of
low-income
9
children
are
considered
at
risk
for
obesity
and
10
diet-related
degenerative
diseases;
and
11
WHEREAS,
the
American
Academy
of
Pediatrics,
12
the
American
Cancer
Society,
the
American
Dietetic
13
Association,
the
American
Diabetes
Association,
the
14
American
Heart
Association,
the
Institute
of
Medicine,
15
the
United
States
Department
of
Agriculture
(USDA),
and
16
the
National
Institutes
of
Health
recommend
high
fiber
17
foods,
including
fruits,
vegetables,
whole
grains,
18
and
legumes,
all
of
which
contain
fiber
and
essential
19
nutrients,
vitamins,
and
minerals,
are
low
in
fat
and
20
calories,
and
contain
no
cholesterol;
NOW
THEREFORE,
21
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
22
respectfully
urges
the
Congress
of
the
United
States
to
23
require
healthful
options
for
students
participating
24
in
meal
service
programs
authorized
under
the
Richard
25
B.
Russell
National
School
Lunch
Act
and
the
Child
26
Nutrition
Act
of
1966;
and
27
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
Senate
respectfully

urges
the
Congress
of
the
United
States
to
require
the

USDA
to
make
available
a
greater
variety
of
fresh
and
2
frozen
produce,
legumes,
whole
grains,
nuts,
and
seeds

throughout
the
commodities
program
that
serves
schools
4
and
children;
and
5
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
appropriate
state
6
agencies
and
the
Chief
of
the
Bureau
of
Nutrition,
7
Health
and
Transportation
Services
are
encouraged
to
8
develop
nutritionally
sound
school
meal
menus;
and
9
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
Secretary
of
10
the
Senate
transmit
a
copy
of
this
resolution
to
the
11
Speaker
of
the
United
States
House
of
Representatives,
12
the
members
of
Iowa’s
congressional
delegation,
and
the
13
United
States
Secretary
of
Agriculture.
