S.F. 2176 Section 1. Section 595.20, Code 2009, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 595.20 Foreign marriages —— marriages solemnized in Iowa —— 3 validity —— required effect . 4 1. A marriage which is solemnized in any other state, 5 territory, country, or any foreign jurisdiction which is 6 valid in that state, territory, country, or other foreign 7 jurisdiction, is valid in this state if the parties meet the 8 requirements for validity pursuant to section 595.2, subsection 9 1, and if the marriage would not otherwise be declared void. 10 2. Another state, territory, country, or any other foreign 11 jurisdiction is not required to give effect to a marriage 12 which is solemnized in this state if the marriage could not be 13 legally solemnized in that jurisdiction. 14 EXPLANATION 15 This bill provides that a marriage solemnized in Iowa is 16 not required to be given effect in another jurisdiction if 17 the marriage could not be legally solemnized in the other 18 jurisdiction. 19 -1- LSB 6138XS (3) 83 pf/rj 1/ 1
