There is appropriated from the general 2 fund of the state to the department of public health for the 3 fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010, and ending June 30, 2011, 4 the following amount or so much thereof as is necessary for the 5 purpose designated: 6 For distribution to existing academic institutions that 7 coordinate area health education centers in the state that 8 recruit and retain health care providers to underserved areas, 9 to provide the nonfederal funding match requirement for receipt 10 of federal grants for area health education centers from the 11 federal health resources and services administration of the 12 United States department of health and human services: 13 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 1,000,000 14 EXPLANATION 15 This bill appropriates $1 million from the general fund of 16 the state to the department of public health for FY 2010-2011 17 for distribution to existing academic institutions that 18 coordinate area health education centers in the state that 19 recruit and retain health care providers to underserved areas, 20 to provide the nonfederal funding match requirement for receipt 21 of federal grants for area health education centers from the 22 federal health resources and services administration of the 23 United States department of health and human services. In 24 Iowa, currently, two educational institutions are coordinating 25 AHEC efforts. Des Moines university is working with 62 26 counties, predominantly north of Interstate 80, with regional 27 offices in Waterloo and Des Moines, and two more anticipated in 28 Carroll and Mason City.
