H.F. 2512 noninterstate highway by a livestock vehicle with five axles, a 1 minimum distance in feet between the centers of the first and 2 fifth axles of sixty-one feet, and a minimum distance between 3 the two rear axles of at least eight feet and one inch is 4 eighty-six thousand pounds. 5 EXPLANATION 6 This bill provides an exception to existing weight 7 restrictions for certain six and seven axle commercial motor 8 vehicles traveling on noninterstate highways. Currently, most 9 vehicles or combinations of vehicles are subject to a gross 10 weight limit of up to 80,000 pounds; however, the gross weight 11 limit for a livestock or construction vehicle with six or seven 12 axles ranges from 80,500 pounds to 90,000 pounds for six axles, 13 and up to 96,000 pounds for seven axles. The bill extends the 14 same weight limits that apply to livestock and construction 15 vehicles to all commercial vehicles of similar size. 16 The bill requires that a commercial motor vehicle traveling 17 under the relaxed weight restrictions must be operated by a 18 person with a commercial driver’s license valid for the vehicle 19 operated, unless the operator is exempt from commercial driver 20 licensing requirements under existing law. 21 The provisions of the bill do not apply to vehicles operated 22 on interstate highways. 23 -2- LSB 6261HH (1) 83 dea/nh 2/ 2
