H.F. 2244 Section 1. Section 279.28, Code 2009, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 279.28 Insurance —— supplies —— textbooks —— inspection of 3 certain materials . 4 1. The board of directors of a school district may 5 provide do all of the following: 6 a. Provide and pay out of the general fund to insure school 7 property a sum as necessary , and may purchase . 8 b. Purchase dictionaries, library books, including books 9 for the purpose of teaching vocal music, maps, charts, and 10 apparatus for the use of the schools as deemed necessary by the 11 board of directors for each school building under its charge ; 12 and may furnish . 13 c. Furnish schoolbooks to indigent children when they are 14 likely to be deprived of the proper benefits of the school 15 unless so aided. 16 2. Effective July 1, 2011, the board of directors of each 17 school district shall make all textbooks, pamphlets, and videos 18 used for school district coursework, at least two months 19 prior to use by the school district, available for inspection 20 at reasonable times upon written request by a student or 21 the parent or guardian of a student enrolled in the school 22 district. 23 EXPLANATION 24 This bill requires school districts to make available for 25 inspection at reasonable times, upon written request by a 26 student or parent or guardian of a student enrolled in the 27 district, all textbooks, pamphlets, and videos used for the 28 school district’s coursework at least two months prior to use 29 of the materials by the school district. 30 -1- LSB 6061YH (4) 83 kh/sc 1/ 1
