  1  3 A Resolution designating the second week in June as
  1  4    Home Education Week in Iowa.
  1  5    WHEREAS, the state of Iowa is committed to
  1  6 excellence in education and recognizes the importance
  1  7 of family participation and parental choice in this
  1  8 pursuit of excellence; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, teaching children at home was the
  1 10 predominant form of education during our nation's
  1 11 early years; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, many notable Americans benefited from home
  1 13 education, including George Washington, Martha
  1 14 Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Quincy Adams,
  1 15 Patrick Henry, John Marshall, Robert E. Lee, Abraham
  1 16 Lincoln, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Thomas Edison,
  1 17 Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, it is important that parents take a strong
  1 19 role in the education of their children; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, the Network of Iowa Christian Home
  1 21 Educators is dedicated to academic excellence and
  1 22 holds a statewide convention for home educators on the
  1 23 second week of June each year that strengthens Iowa's
  1 24 pursuit of excellence in education; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, a growing number of parents in Iowa have
  1 26 chosen to teach their children at home; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 27    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  1 28 recognizes the second week of June in 2008 as Home
  1 29 Education Week in Iowa and invites the citizens of
  1 30 Iowa during this time to recognize the contributions
  2  1 to education excellence made by home educators.
