Senate Resolution 112 - Introduced PAG LIN S.R. ________ H.R. ________ 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY SEYMOUR, HATCH, and RAGAN 1 3 A Resolution recognizing the month of March 2008 as 1 4 Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month. 1 5 WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis is a condition that 1 6 occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the large 1 7 veins, which leads to partially or completely blocked 1 8 circulation and may result in a fatal pulmonary 1 9 embolism; and 1 10 WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis is a serious but 1 11 preventable medical condition; and 1 12 WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis occurs in 1 13 approximately two million Americans every year; and 1 14 WHEREAS, fatal pulmonary embolism causes more 1 15 deaths each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined; 1 16 and 1 17 WHEREAS, complications from deep vein thrombosis 1 18 take up to 300,000 American lives each year; and 1 19 WHEREAS, fatal pulmonary embolism may be the most 1 20 common preventable cause of hospital death in the 1 21 United States; and 1 22 WHEREAS, the risk factors for deep vein thrombosis 1 23 include cancer and certain heart or respiratory 1 24 diseases; and 1 25 WHEREAS, pulmonary embolism is the leading cause of 1 26 maternal death associated with childbirth; and 1 27 WHEREAS, according to a survey conducted by the 1 28 American Public Health Association, 74 percent of 1 29 Americans are unaware of deep vein thrombosis; NOW 1 30 THEREFORE, 2 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 2 acknowledges the critical importance of raising public 2 3 awareness of the threat and causes of this deadly 2 4 disease, and for that purpose recognizes the month of 2 5 March 2008 as Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month. 2 6 LSB 6522SS 82 2 7 jr/rj/5
