House Resolution 12 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY HORBACH 1 3 A Resolution designating May 1 as Iowa Right to Work Day. 1 4 WHEREAS, the federal Taft=Hartley Act of 1947 1 5 established the rights of states to enact 1 6 right=to=work laws for workers in their states and 1 7 freedom to choose to prohibit labor shop agreements 1 8 within their borders; and 1 9 WHEREAS, right=to=work laws guarantee that a person 1 10 cannot be compelled, as a condition of employment, to 1 11 join or not to join a labor union, or to pay dues to a 1 12 labor union; and 1 13 WHEREAS, Iowa's Fifty=second General Assembly 1 14 enshrined Iowa as a right=to=work state; and 1 15 WHEREAS, Iowa's right=to=work law became effective 1 16 on May 1, 1947, and has remained in full force and 1 17 effect since that day, giving Iowa workers freedom of 1 18 choice in the workplace; and 1 19 WHEREAS, for nearly 60 years, this freedom has 1 20 guaranteed the rights of Iowa workers, along with 1 21 their fellow workers in over 20 other states, the 1 22 power to support or refuse to support a union in their 1 23 workplace, according to their own personal beliefs; 1 24 and 1 25 WHEREAS, many studies have shown that states whose 1 26 workers benefit from the protections of the 1 27 right=to=work law have higher growth and wage rates; 1 28 and 1 29 WHEREAS, economic professionals throughout the 1 30 world have concluded that right=to=work laws promote 2 1 economic development and growth of new and existing 2 2 businesses; NOW THEREFORE, 2 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 2 4 That May 1 be designated "Iowa Right to Work Day", and 2 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of 2 6 Representatives encourages the workers of Iowa to 2 7 recognize and celebrate the importance of this day to 2 8 ensure individual choice in employment for all 2 9 workers. 2 10 LSB 1608YH 82 2 11 ec:rj/es/88 1
