  1  3 A Resolution honoring Marilynne Robinson for her
  1  4    Pulitzer Prize=winning novel "Gilead".
  1  5    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson has been a faculty
  1  6 member at the famed Iowa Writers' Workshop at the
  1  7 University of Iowa for 14 years; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson authored the novel
  1  9 "Housekeeping" in 1981, earning respect for her style
  1 10 and a Pulitzer Prize nomination for her inaugural
  1 11 effort; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson was a recipient of a
  1 13 Strauss Living, awarded by the American Academy of
  1 14 Arts and Letters, giving up the remaining three years
  1 15 of the honor to continue her mentoring of writers in
  1 16 Iowa; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson also has published two
  1 18 important nonfiction works, placing her in the upper
  1 19 echelon of modern essayists; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson continues to prove her
  1 21 skill and unique touch by crafting a second award=
  1 22 worthy novel, garnering praise and acclaim from across
  1 23 the nation; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson has created "Gilead", a
  1 25 peaceful, mesmerizing, and beautiful look at the
  1 26 relationship between a father and son in rural 1950s
  1 27 Iowa, exploring the complex nature of one's faith and
  1 28 future; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson has received the honor
  1 30 of earning the National Book Critics' Circle Award and
  2  1 the celebrated Pulitzer Prize for "Gilead"; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson uses the style of
  2  3 flashbacks and letters to illustrate her delicate
  2  4 message, relating a father's wisdom and life events to
  2  5 his young son; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson allows the reader to
  2  7 feel the poetry and tranquility of the language,
  2  8 bringing heartfelt descriptions to entertaining
  2  9 characters and situations; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, Marilynne Robinson explores the ageless
  2 11 questions of time, eternity, and what lies ahead for
  2 12 us all; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 13    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 14 congratulates Marilynne Robinson for her achievements
  2 15 in writing, focus on teaching, and ability to make us
  2 16 feel what is beautiful.
