Senate Resolution 56 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY BOLKCOM and DVORSKY 1 3 A Resolution to recognize and honor Frank Conroy 1 4 posthumously for his lifetime of service and 1 5 achievement. 1 6 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy came to know Iowa as his 1 7 lasting home, utilizing the exceptional environment to 1 8 pass on his wealth of wisdom and instruction; and 1 9 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy experienced a unique and 1 10 sometimes difficult childhood, using that experience 1 11 to create a lucid and evocative story, captivating the 1 12 nation, and endearing him to the hearts of his 1 13 readers; and 1 14 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy pursued other forms of art, 1 15 excelling at the piano and playing with some of the 1 16 great jazz musicians of his time; and 1 17 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy developed a clear writing 1 18 style and ventured into journalism, writing for 1 19 magazines and composing many short stories; and 1 20 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy accepted teaching positions 1 21 at the University of Iowa, George Mason University, 1 22 Brandeis University, and Massachusetts Institute of 1 23 Technology, passing on his love of the arts and 1 24 motivating young writers around the country to excel 1 25 at their craft; and 1 26 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy took great interest in 1 27 nurturing young writers and guiding them to realize 1 28 their absolute potential, bringing true honesty and 1 29 seriousness to the task; and 1 30 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy worked as the director of the 2 1 literature program at the National Endowment for the 2 2 Arts, continuing to support and encourage young 2 3 writers; and 2 4 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy was handpicked by University 2 5 of Iowa President James O. Freedman to lead the 2 6 innovative and legendary University of Iowa Writers' 2 7 Workshop; and 2 8 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy served as a role model and 2 9 mentor for 18 years at the University of Iowa, 2 10 bringing talented individuals to the state to study 2 11 and sharpen their gifts for writing; and 2 12 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy showed his passion for 2 13 literature and reading, inspiring others to write and 2 14 express themselves in ways that resonate with readers 2 15 around the world; and 2 16 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy used instinctive care and 2 17 extraordinary analysis in his teaching, leading the 2 18 writers to uncover the true greatness within them and 2 19 share it with the world; and 2 20 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy showed dedication in writing, 2 21 music, and teaching, developing a distinctive style 2 22 that intertwined all these endeavors and made him 2 23 truly unique; and 2 24 WHEREAS, Frank Conroy devoted himself to providing 2 25 a community in which writers could excel, leading them 2 26 to respect the art and pushing them to reach for 2 27 greatness; NOW THEREFORE, 2 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 29 posthumously honors Frank Conroy for his lifetime of 2 30 dedication to teaching and enduring demonstration of 3 1 love for the arts and humanities, and expresses its 3 2 appreciation for his mentoring of so many gifted 3 3 students and writers, making his contributions to 3 4 society ongoing and everlasting. 3 5 LSB 3676SS 81 3 6 jr:rj/gg/14 1
