  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                       BY  STEWART
  1  3 A Resolution honoring the city of Clinton on its
  1  4    sesquicentennial.
  1  5    WHEREAS, in 1836, 10 years before Iowa became a
  1  6 state, the tiny hamlet of New York was platted along
  1  7 the Mississippi River, by its first settler, Joseph
  1  8 Bartlett; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, in 1855 the Chicago, Iowa, and Nebraska
  1 10 Railroad determined that its line would cross the
  1 11 Mississippi directly across from the New York
  1 12 community; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, with the coming of the railroad, the
  1 14 community was renamed Clinton, in honor of New York
  1 15 Governor DeWitt Clinton, and the town began to grow,
  1 16 absorbing nearby communities and becoming the county
  1 17 seat; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, the Clinton area was soon regarded as the
  1 19 sawmill capital of the nation and by 1892, lumber
  1 20 production had risen to more than 195 million board
  1 21 feet; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, the railroad and the river continue to
  1 23 sustain and promote economic activity and diversity,
  1 24 attracting manufacturing and heavy industry to the
  1 25 community, providing opportunities for sport and
  1 26 recreational activities, and promoting commerce; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, today the city of Clinton is home to some
  1 28 28,000 Iowans, the Clinton Community College, and
  1 29 Ashford University; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, the city of Clinton offers a variety of
  2  1 attractions, including the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, a
  2  2 14=acre outdoor museum of select=labeled trees,
  2  3 shrubs, ground covers, perennials, and annuals, and
  2  4 the Lillian Russell Theatre, located aboard a restored
  2  5 old river paddle wheeler moored on the riverfront; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, the city of Clinton is celebrating its
  2  7 150th anniversary, with celebrations lasting through
  2  8 the spring and summer of 2005; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  9    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 10 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the city
  2 11 of Clinton on its sesquicentennial and invites all
  2 12 Iowans to make a visit to Clinton part of their summer
  2 13 plans.
