  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                 BY  MILLER and KREIMAN
  1  3 A Resolution recognizing May 1, 2005, as Law Day.
  1  4    WHEREAS, on May 1, 2005, citizens across the United
  1  5 States will celebrate Law Day, an opportunity for our
  1  6 nation to honor the rule of law which has served to
  1  7 maintain our nation's heritage of liberty, justice,
  1  8 and equality under the law; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, the theme of Law Day 2005, "The American
  1 10 Jury:  We the People in Action", acknowledges the
  1 11 importance of the role of juries in the American legal
  1 12 system; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, one of the principles Americans fought for
  1 14 in the Revolutionary War was the right to trial by
  1 15 jury; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, our founding fathers believed that juries
  1 17 are the cornerstone of democracy and a means for
  1 18 citizens to resist the tyranny of an unjust
  1 19 government; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, trial by jury is a right guaranteed by
  1 21 both the United States and Iowa constitutions; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, each day, juries' decisions profoundly
  1 23 affect the lives of countless individuals as well as
  1 24 our society as a whole; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 25    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  1 26 acknowledges the impact that juries have on government
  1 27 and society and the importance of educating our fellow
  1 28 citizens about the significance of jury service; and
  1 29    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate expresses
  1 30 its appreciation to the many citizens who take time
  2  1 away from their families and jobs to answer the call
  2  2 for jury service.
