Senate Resolution 37 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY RAGAN 1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of Riceville on its 1 4 sesquicentennial. 1 5 WHEREAS, the city of Riceville is a community of 1 6 900 friendly people, known as the hub of Northeast 1 7 Iowa and located on Iowa Highway 9; and 1 8 WHEREAS, Riceville, located in both Howard and 1 9 Mitchell Counties, was settled and platted in 1855 by 1 10 Dennis Rice and his family, and incorporated in 1892; 1 11 and 1 12 WHEREAS, Lake Hendricks, a 52=acre man=made lake 1 13 sited on a 130=acre park in Riceville, provides 1 14 camping, fishing, and picnicking opportunities for the 1 15 entire area; and 1 16 WHEREAS, the James W. Herring Golf Course and 1 17 Country Club provides a challenging nine=hole golf 1 18 course for Riceville residents and visitors; and 1 19 WHEREAS, the Wapsi Great Western Bike Trail, 1 20 formerly the location of the Chicago Great Western 1 21 Railroad, runs through the Lake Hendricks park; and 1 22 WHEREAS, five full=size vaudeville curtains painted 1 23 as scenery and as advertisements which were used in 1 24 the turn=of=the=century Brown Opera House in Riceville 1 25 now hang in the public library; and 1 26 WHEREAS, famous citizens of Riceville include 1 27 United States ambassadors John and Larry Dinger, 1 28 Luther College choral conductor and instructor Weston 1 29 Noble, author Jane Elliott, inventor Kenneth Mosher, 1 30 sculptress Isabelle Kimball, editor Beatrice Blackman 2 1 Gould, athlete Raymond Conger, and tenor Warren 2 2 Proctor; and 2 3 WHEREAS, the city of Riceville is celebrating its 2 4 150th anniversary with a sesquicentennial celebration 2 5 on August 5 through 7, 2005; NOW THEREFORE, 2 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 7 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the city 2 8 of Riceville on the city's sesquicentennial and 2 9 invites all Iowans to make a visit to Riceville part 2 10 of their summer vacations. 2 11 LSB 3557SS 81 2 12 jr:nh/pj/5 1
