Senate Resolution 35 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY KETTERING and SHULL 1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of Sac City on its 1 4 sesquicentennial. 1 5 WHEREAS, in September 1854, Francis Cory and his 1 6 family arrived on the banks of the Raccoon River in 1 7 Sac County, soon to be joined by the families of Joel 1 8 Austin, Jacob McAfee, and David Metcalf; and 1 9 WHEREAS, the original county land survey reveals 1 10 that by October of 1855, a small settlement with 10 1 11 dwellings and three cultivated fields was established 1 12 in Jackson Township, the location of present=day Sac 1 13 City; and 1 14 WHEREAS, Sac City was designated the county seat in 1 15 1856 and was officially incorporated in 1875, quickly 1 16 growing into a bustling commercial center with the 1 17 first courthouse built in 1862, later replaced in 1 18 1873, and again in 1889; and 1 19 WHEREAS, Sac City is located in north central Iowa 1 20 on U.S. Highway 20, and nestled in the Raccoon River 1 21 Valley; and 1 22 WHEREAS, Sac City is a family=oriented community 1 23 with award=winning schools, beautiful tree=lined 1 24 streets, and turn=of=the=century architecture 1 25 showcased in many Victorian homes; and 1 26 WHEREAS, today Sac City is home to some 2,400 1 27 Iowans with a proud mixture of cultural heritages; and 1 28 WHEREAS, the city of Sac City is celebrating its 1 29 150th anniversary, with a celebration on July 1 1 30 through July 4, 2005; NOW THEREFORE, 2 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 2 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the city 2 3 of Sac City on the city's sesquicentennial and invites 2 4 all Iowans to make the July celebration in Sac City 2 5 part of their summer vacations. 2 6 LSB 3548SS 81 2 7 jr:nh/pj/5 1
