Senate Resolution 32 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY JOHNSON, ANGELO, BEALL, BEHN, BLACK, BOETTGER, 1 3 BOLKCOM, BRUNKHORST, CONNOLLY, COURTNEY, DANIELSON, 1 4 DEARDEN, DOTZLER, DVORSKY, FRAISE, GASKILL, GRONSTAL, 1 5 HAHN, HANCOCK, HATCH, HORN, HOUSER, IVERSON, 1 6 KETTERING, KIBBIE, KREIMAN, LAMBERTI, LARSON, LUNDBY, 1 7 McCOY, McKIBBEN, McKINLEY, MILLER, MULDER, PUTNEY, 1 8 QUIRMBACH, RAGAN, RIELLY, SCHOENJAHN, SENG, SEYMOUR, 1 9 SHULL, STEWART, TINSMAN, WARD, WARNSTADT, WIECK, WOOD, 1 10 ZAUN, and ZIEMAN 1 11 A Resolution posthumously honoring His Holiness Pope 1 12 John Paul II and commemorating his life's work. 1 13 WHEREAS, in 1978, the Bishop of Krakow, Poland, 1 14 Karol Wojtyla, was elected as Pope of the Roman 1 15 Catholic Church, taking the name John Paul II; and 1 16 WHEREAS, the odyssey of his papacy covered more 1 17 than 104 overseas trips to over 130 countries, 1 18 covering almost 690,000 miles and lasting more than a 1 19 quarter of a century, making Pope John Paul II the 1 20 widest=traveled Pope in history, and one of the 1 21 longest=serving; and 1 22 WHEREAS, on October 4, 1979, in response to an 1 23 invitation from the late Bishop Maurice Dingman and 1 24 rural Truro farmer Joe Hays, that odyssey brought him 1 25 to Iowa; and 1 26 WHEREAS, on that date some 380,000 people crowded 1 27 into Living History Farms on the outskirts of Des 1 28 Moines; and 1 29 WHEREAS, the Pope then celebrated a two=and=one= 1 30 half=hour mass and delivered a homily praising farmers 2 1 and telling them, "You who are farmers today are 2 2 stewards of a gift from God ... You have the potential 2 3 to provide food for the millions who have nothing to 2 4 eat and thus to help rid the world of famine"; and 2 5 WHEREAS, for the next 25 years the Pope continued 2 6 his travels, promoting peace and the dignity of human 2 7 life and championing the cause of human rights, 2 8 particularly the rights of children; and 2 9 WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II was an ecumenical pope, 2 10 reaching out to Protestant and Orthodox denominations; 2 11 and 2 12 WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II sought to engage in 2 13 dialogue with other world faiths, becoming the first 2 14 pope to visit a Jewish synagogue since the age of 2 15 Peter, and in 2001 becoming the first pope to enter an 2 16 Islamic mosque, and later placing a handwritten prayer 2 17 in the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem; and 2 18 WHEREAS, after a lifetime of service to humanity 2 19 and devotion to God, Pope John Paul II died on 2 20 Saturday, April 2, 2005; NOW THEREFORE, 2 21 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 22 honors the memory and lifework of Pope John Paul II 2 23 and on behalf of its members expresses heartfelt 2 24 condolences on his death. 2 25 LSB 3536SS 81 2 26 jr:rj/sh/8 1
