  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                       BY  BOLKCOM
  1  3 A Resolution requesting the legislative council to
  1  4    authorize an interim study committee to review the
  1  5    nurse staffing needs of the hospitals in this state.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the increasing acuity level of patients in
  1  7 hospitals, the decreasing average length of patient
  1  8 stay, and the use of new medical technologies have all
  1  9 led to increases in the amount of care required for
  1 10 patients while in a hospital; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, there is a persistent shortage in the
  1 12 number of qualified nurses willing to fill vacant
  1 13 positions in hospitals; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, research indicates that hospitals with low
  1 15 nurse staffing levels tend to have higher rates of
  1 16 poor patient outcomes; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 17    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the legislative
  1 18 council is requested to authorize a study committee
  1 19 for the 2005 legislative interim to review the nurse
  1 20 staffing needs of the hospitals in this state and to
  1 21 make recommendations for options to improve hospital
  1 22 nurse staffing levels.
