  1  6  JOHNSON, KETTERING, KIBBIE, LAMBERTI, LARSON, LUNDBY,
  1  7   McCOY, McKIBBEN, McKINLEY, MILLER, MULDER, PUTNEY,
  1  8  QUIRMBACH, RAGAN, RIELLY, SCHOENJAHN, SENG, SEYMOUR,
  1  9 SHULL, STEWART, TINSMAN, WARD, WARNSTADT, WIECK, WOOD,

  1 11 A Resolution urging the United States Congress to take
  1 12    action to maintain the United States Veterans Medical
  1 13    Center at Knoxville.
  1 14    WHEREAS, the United States Department of Veterans
  1 15 Affairs, as part of the Capital Asset Realignment for
  1 16 Enhanced Services (CARES) program, has decided to
  1 17 relocate nursing home and inpatient care from the
  1 18 United States Veterans Medical Center at Knoxville to
  1 19 Des Moines; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, for over 70 years the Knoxville facility
  1 21 has provided convenient and essential medical services
  1 22 to Iowa's veterans; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the proposed cuts will adversely affect
  1 24 both veterans' services and will cost the Knoxville
  1 25 community hundreds of jobs; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, supporters of the Knoxville facility have
  1 27 collected approximately 28,000 signatures on petitions
  1 28 protesting the proposed cuts; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, at a time when more veterans are in need
  1 30 of access to quality health care than ever before, it
  2  1 is irresponsible to shut down facilities and cut
  2  2 services; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  3    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate
  2  4 urges the United States Congress to take action to
  2  5 preserve the Knoxville, Iowa, Veterans Medical Center
  2  6 and extend its vital mission of providing quality and
  2  7 accessible medical care to veterans; and
  2  8    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
  2  9 Resolution be transmitted to the President of the
  2 10 United States Senate and the Speaker of the United
  2 11 States House of Representatives and to members of
  2 12 Iowa's congressional delegation.
