Senate Resolution 151 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY RAGAN and SEYMOUR 1 3 A Resolution designating April 2006 as Kidney Cancer 1 4 Awareness Month. 1 5 WHEREAS, each year more than 36,000 people in the 1 6 United States are diagnosed with kidney cancer, and 1 7 more than 100,000 kidney cancer survivors are 1 8 currently living in the United States; and 1 9 WHEREAS, the exact cause of kidney cancer is 1 10 unknown; and 1 11 WHEREAS, kidney cancer occurs nearly twice as often 1 12 in men as in women and most frequently in men over 40 1 13 years of age; and 1 14 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that 1 15 in 2006 there will be 38,890 new cases of kidney 1 16 cancer diagnosed in the United States, with 24,650 of 1 17 those cases diagnosed in men and 14,240 of those cases 1 18 diagnosed in women; and 1 19 WHEREAS, other than surgery, the most commonly used 1 20 treatments for kidney cancer are immunotherapy, 1 21 radiation, and chemotherapy; and 1 22 WHEREAS, breakthroughs in research during the past 1 23 year have given renewed hope to patients who 1 24 previously had few treatment options; NOW THEREFORE, 1 25 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 1 26 designates the month of April as Kidney Cancer 1 27 Awareness Month in Iowa, and urges the citizens of 1 28 this state to lend their support to efforts to develop 1 29 new and more effective treatments for controlling and 1 30 curing kidney cancer; and 2 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of 2 2 this Resolution be prepared and forwarded by the 2 3 Secretary of the Senate to the National Kidney Cancer 2 4 Association located in Evanston, Illinois. 2 5 LSB 6645SS 81 2 6 rn:nh/cf/24 1
