  1 12 A Resolution to welcome the 2006 Special Olympics USA
  1 13    National Games to Iowa.
  1 14    WHEREAS, the 2006 Special Olympics USA National
  1 15 Games, the first=ever United States national games,
  1 16 will be held July 2 through July 7, 2006, at Iowa
  1 17 State University in Ames, Iowa; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, this major sports event will bring 3,000
  1 19 Special Olympics athletes from across the United
  1 20 States, 2,000 coaches and official delegates, 10,000
  1 21 family members and friends, 8,000 volunteers, and
  1 22 30,000 spectators; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the festivities begin July 2, 2006, with
  1 24 the opening ceremonies to be held in Hilton Coliseum,
  1 25 including star=studded entertainment, the Parade of
  1 26 Athletes, and the lighting of the torch; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, a list of events for the 2006 USA National
  1 28 Games includes aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling,
  1 29 golf, gymnastics, power=lifting, soccer, softball,
  1 30 tennis, track and field, volleyball, and a motor
  2  1 activity training program; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, major sponsors and area businesses will
  2  3 host the "festival village", where attendees can
  2  4 gather information and participate in a variety of
  2  5 activities; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, Iowa has long shown its commitment to the
  2  7 Special Olympics, first by the ongoing and unstinting
  2  8 support of Iowans and Iowa businesses and also by
  2  9 legislative appropriations of over $1,000,000; NOW
  2 10 THEREFORE,
  2 11    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate takes
  2 12 great pleasure in welcoming the 2006 Special Olympics
  2 13 USA National Games to the campus of Iowa State
  2 14 University in Ames, Iowa; and
  2 15    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate offers its
  2 16 thanks to those people and organizations that have
  2 17 donated their time, money, and energies toward
  2 18 bringing the first=ever United States national games
  2 19 to Iowa.
