1 3 A Resolution designating May 2006 as Huntington's
1 4 Disease Awareness Month.
1 5 WHEREAS, our nation has had a long=standing
1 6 commitment to the development of techniques and
1 7 methods of conquering disease; and
1 8 WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease is a devastating,
1 9 degenerative brain disorder which afflicts many
1 10 citizens of this country in a relentless and, at
1 11 present, incurable way; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease was once regarded as
1 13 a rare disorder but is now recognized as one of the
1 14 most common hereditary diseases; and
1 15 WHEREAS, the existence of this dreaded disease
1 16 presents a challenge to the love and humanitarianism
1 17 of the American people; and
1 18 WHEREAS, since the discovery of the genetic basis
1 19 for the disease in 1993, the pace of research into the
1 20 cause and nature of the disease has increased
1 21 dramatically; and
1 22 WHEREAS, the Huntington's Disease Society of
1 23 America, Inc. has supported this research, bringing
1 24 new hope to those who bear the burden of this tragic
1 25 affliction; NOW THEREFORE,
1 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
1 27 designates the month of May as Huntington's Disease
1 28 Awareness Month in Iowa, and urges the citizens of
1 29 this state to lend their support to efforts to control
1 30 this disease so that the suffering it induces may be
2 1 eliminated.
