1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___
1 2 BY DANIELSON
1 3 A Resolution honoring J.H. Peet Junior High School in
1 4 Cedar Falls, Iowa, for becoming a 2005=2006 Blue
1 5 Ribbon School.
1 6 WHEREAS, in 2001 President Bush proposed and the
1 7 United States Congress enacted the No Child Left
1 8 Behind Act; and
1 9 WHEREAS, to reward successful schools, the U.S.
1 10 Department of Education established the No Child Left
1 11 Behind=Blue Ribbon Schools Program to honor those
1 12 elementary and secondary schools in the United States
1 13 that make significant progress in closing the
1 14 achievement gap or whose students achieve at very high
1 15 levels; and
1 16 WHEREAS, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes
1 17 schools, regardless of demographics, that are in the
1 18 top 10 percent of schools as measured by state tests
1 19 in both reading and mathematics; and
1 20 WHEREAS, students at J.H. Peet Junior High School
1 21 achieved all=time=high levels of proficiency in 2004=
1 22 2005 as measured by the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills;
1 23 and
1 24 WHEREAS, students at Peet had an average reading
1 25 proficiency of 87.7 percent, an average math
1 26 proficiency of 91.4 percent, and an average science
1 27 proficiency of 97.8 percent; and
1 28 WHEREAS, Peet's special programs subgroup and
1 29 socioeconomic subgroup achieved between 70 percent and
1 30 100 percent proficiency in all areas; and
2 1 WHEREAS, Peet was one of only five schools
2 2 nominated by the State of Iowa to be honored at a
2 3 ceremony in Washington, D.C.; and
2 4 WHEREAS, the recognition of J.H. Peet Junior High
2 5 School as a Blue Ribbon School is the result of work
2 6 by 500 students, their parents, their teachers, and
2 7 their community; NOW THEREFORE,
2 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
2 9 commends and applauds J.H. Peet Junior High School and
2 10 its students, parents, and teachers on this remarkable
2 11 achievement.
