1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY IVERSON
1 3 A Resolution honoring Rotary International on the
1 4 occasion of its 100th anniversary and recognizing
1 5 February 23, 2005, as Rotary International Day.
1 6 WHEREAS, Rotary International is a worldwide
1 7 organization of business and professional leaders that
1 8 provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical
1 9 standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill
1 10 and peace in the world; and
1 11 WHEREAS, today approximately 1.2 million Rotarians
1 12 belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166
1 13 countries; and
1 14 WHEREAS, Rotary is the world's first service club,
1 15 formed on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois, and
1 16 named for the early practice of rotating meetings
1 17 among members' offices; and
1 18 WHEREAS, Rotarians first set up an endowment fund
1 19 in 1917 for doing good in the world, later designated
1 20 as the Rotary Foundation in 1928; and
1 21 WHEREAS, contributions to the Rotary Foundation
1 22 today total more than $80 million annually and support
1 23 a wide range of humanitarian grants and educational
1 24 programs that bring hope and promote international
1 25 understanding throughout the world; and
1 26 WHEREAS, among its hundreds of projects, in 1985
1 27 Rotary International resolved to immunize all of the
1 28 world's children against polio and to date more than
1 29 $500 million has been committed to that goal; NOW
1 30 THEREFORE,
2 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate
2 2 congratulates the organization and all of its members
2 3 for a century of commitment to public service,
2 4 progress, and prosperity, and recognizes February 23,
2 5 2005, as Rotary International Day; and
2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 7 Resolution be transmitted to Glenn E. Estess, Sr.,
2 8 president of Rotary International.
