  1  3                 (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 3255)
  1  4 A Resolution declaring March 15, 2006, as a day to
  1  5    recognize and honor Iowa's community colleges
  1  6    on their 40th anniversary.
  1  7    WHEREAS, 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of the
  1  8 designation by the state board of education of the
  1  9 first of 15 merged area schools, now called community
  1 10 colleges, resulting from Senate File 550, floor
  1 11 managed by Senator Jack Kibbie during the Sixty=First
  1 12 General Assembly, passed by the Senate by a vote of
  1 13 47=11 and by the House of Representatives by a vote of
  1 14 80=24, and signed into law by Governor Harold Hughes
  1 15 on June 7, 1965; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Iowa's community colleges enroll one of
  1 17 every four citizens of the state of Iowa in credit and
  1 18 noncredit educational offerings; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, Iowa's community colleges have provided
  1 20 easy access to thousands of Iowans who seek higher
  1 21 education, including many who transfer credits to
  1 22 senior institutions and thousands more who seek high=
  1 23 quality vocational=technical programs; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, adult and continuing education courses and
  1 25 job training programs have trained thousands of Iowa's
  1 26 citizens, who have improved their skills, benefiting
  1 27 businesses, the workforce, and the overall economy of
  1 28 the state; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, community colleges are the port of entry
  1 30 for many of the poorest, most challenged, and most
  2  1 disadvantaged citizens of the state; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  2    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2  3 declares March 15, 2006, as a day to recognize and
  2  4 honor the 15 community colleges in Iowa on the 40th
  2  5 anniversary of their founding.
