  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                 BY  DVORSKY and BOLKCOM
  1  3 A Resolution honoring David J. Skorton for his service
  1  4    to Iowa as an educator and administrator and as
  1  5    President of the University of Iowa.
  1  6    WHEREAS, David Skorton has had a long and
  1  7 remarkable career at the University of Iowa; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, President Skorton has been a faculty
  1  9 member at the University of Iowa since 1980, holding
  1 10 joint appointments at the rank of professor in the
  1 11 departments of internal medicine, electrical and
  1 12 computer engineering, and biomedical engineering; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, President Skorton was appointed vice
  1 14 president for research in 1992, served as interim vice
  1 15 president for external relations in 2000, and served
  1 16 as vice president for research and external relations
  1 17 from March 2002 until he assumed the presidency; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, on March 1, 2003, David J. Skorton was
  1 19 appointed the 19th president of the University of
  1 20 Iowa; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, a small sample of President Skorton's
  1 22 activities includes the cofounding and codirecting of
  1 23 the University of Iowa Adolescent and Adult Congenital
  1 24 Heart Disease Clinic at the University of Iowa
  1 25 Hospitals and Clinics, serving as president of the
  1 26 Association for the Accreditation of Human Research
  1 27 Protection Programs, Inc., chairing the Iowa City Area
  1 28 Development Group, serving on the Iowa Department of
  1 29 Economic Development Board, and serving on the boards
  1 30 and committees of many local, state, and national
  2  1 organizations; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, after over a quarter century of dedicated
  2  3 service to the university and to all of Iowa,
  2  4 President Skorton will now take up a new challenge as
  2  5 the 12th president of Cornell University, New York
  2  6 state's land=grant university and a world=renowned
  2  7 research institution; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  8    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate pays
  2  9 tribute to David J. Skorton for over twenty=five years
  2 10 of service to the people of Iowa and for his enormous
  2 11 contribution to higher education and the University of
  2 12 Iowa during his service as professor, administrator,
  2 13 and President and congratulates him for the many
  2 14 beneficial improvements to that institution during his
  2 15 tenure; and
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
  2 17 Resolution be presented to University of Iowa
  2 18 President David J. Skorton.
